PC통신 ‘유니텔(UNITEL)’ 26년 만에 서비스 종료

마지막 PC통신 서비스로 남아있던 '유니텔'이 오는 6월 30일 서비스 종료될 예정입니다. 서비스 시작 26년 만입니다. 유니텔은 지난 4일 홈페이지를 통해 "1996년 서비스를 시작해 웹 포털사이트로 변경 후 현재까지 고객님들께 서비스를 제공해 왔으나, 부득이하게 서비스를 종료하게 됐다"고 공지했습니다.

유니텔은 1996년 삼성SDS의 산하 PC통신 서비스로 시작됐습니다. 유니텔은 하이텔, 천리안, 나우누리 등 초기 PC통신보다 사용성이 개선된 2세대 PC통신으로 분류됩니다. 초창기 유니텔에는 이해진 네이버 글로벌투자책임자(GIO), 김범수 카카오 이사회 의장 등 벤처붐을 주도했던 인력들이 포진해 있었습니다. 2000년에는 독립법인이 됐다가 2003년 다우기술에 인수돼 유니텔네트웍스로 사명을 변경했고 2008년에는 다우기술에 합병되었습니다. 이후 인터넷의 보급으로 다른 PC통신들이 잇따라 서비스를 종료하면서 2015년 6월 부터는 유니텔만 남았고 유니텔은 포털사이트로 전환해 서비스를 이어오다가 이번에 서비스 종료를 결정하게 되었습니다.

UNITEL, which remained as the last PC communication service, is scheduled to end on June 30. It's been 26 years since the service started. Unitell announced on its website on the 4th, "We started the service in 1996 and changed it to a web portal site, and have been providing services to customers so far, but inevitably ended the service."

Unitel started as a PC communication service under Samsung SDS in 1996. Unitel is classified as a second-generation PC communication with improved usability compared to early PC communication such as Heitel, Chollian, and Nownuri. In the early days, Unitel was home to people who led the venture boom, including Naver Global Investment Officer (GIO) Lee Hae-jin and Kakao Board Chairman Kim Bum-soo. It became an independent corporation in 2000, was acquired by Dow Technology in 2003, changed its name to Unitel Networks, and merged with Dow Technology in 2008. Since then, due to the spread of the Internet, other PC communications have terminated their services one after another, leaving only Unitel from June 2015, and Unitel has switched to a portal site and decided to end the service this time.
